Chapter 14

Micah

I HEARD A RINGING OFF in the distance. My body felt heavy, like a bag of sand being weighed down by a rock. The ringing continued, forcing a groan from my lips. I didn’t even need to open my eyes to know it was the dead of night. To know that I should’ve been sleeping after a long night at the club.

But my wants and wishes didn’t stop my phone from ringing.

“Hello?” I asked sleepily.

“You’re up. Get dressed. I’m texting you an address. Be there in an hour.”

I grunted. “Is there any way we can—”

The call hung up and I tossed my phone between my legs. I dug the heels of my hands into my eyes and started trying to wake myself up. Shit. Everything in my place was dark. The windows. The world outside. Even the hallway. All of it, dark.

“Come on. You got yourself into this. Get up.” I groaned.

I raised myself out of bed and did the best I could to wake up. But nothing woke me up like the ding of my text message alerts. In the middle of brushing my teeth, I scrambled to get to my phone. I kept the internal pep talk going. Telling myself that this was helping Sierra. That finally, I’d get into the thick of it and get some damn answers out of people. Because the more I thought about all of this, and the more it tumbled around in my head, the more I wondered if the police were in on this somehow.

Especially since no one was filling Sierra in on anything.

With toothpaste dripping off my chin, my eyes scanned the address and the rules that came with it. I had to be dressed nice. I had to clean myself up. I had to leave my phone at home and come unarmed. I also had to be prepared to meet up with two more people. Whatever the hell that meant.

Then, I received a text message right behind it. The faces of the two people I was meeting. Which meant they were probably sent my face.

At least my face isn’t in the news with the Monarch’s name.

But, it wouldn’t be long before someone would associate me with my own business. Hell, for some people, they already had.

“I really didn’t think this through,” I murmured.

Still, I didn’t have a choice. I’d gotten into this, and I needed to do the best I could. I finished cleaning myself up and picked out a blazer to go with my outfit. I grabbed my things and snatched up my phone, trying to take even breaths. My stomach felt as if it were full of butterflies. I’d never felt so sick with anxiety in all of my life. But, the more I told myself this was all to help Sierra, the more it settled me.

Until I arrived at my final location.

I pulled up to the curb and turned the lights off on my car. The last thing I needed was to be drawing attention to myself.
